With legal foreign trade, cattle ranching boomed. ) Before the reforms, 100,000 hides were exported per year from Buenos Aires; by 1776, the number had exploded to some 700,000 a year (Scobie, p. 61). New industries also were developing, such as a shoe industry. One of the most important areas of growth was the development of the beef industry; dried and salted beef were exported for use by slave populations in Brazil and Cuba. The Crown’s new policies contributed to the rapid growth in the population of Buenos Aires.

The British did not limit themselves to the slave trade, however. The ships used to transport slaves also contained manufactured goods, which the British exchanged for hides, tallow, and other local products. ) The British also continued to trade for silver from Peru. The Spanish ultimately prevailed, but only by preventing the natives from planting their crops, which resulted in famine and disease. Ironically, the Spanish “won,” but at the cost of a severe population decline, which resulted in a dramatic loss of labor.
