Modern refining methods eliminate most of the sulphur in crude oils. In some gas pools with a high sulphur content, the sulphur is extracted at a profit. Generally, crudes of a high specific gravity contain more sulphur than others. Heavy Mexican crudes can have 3-5% sulphur and are among the world’s highest sulphur oils. 5% sulphur, such as Pennsylvania oil, are among the low-sulphur crudes. About half of the oil produced in the United States is low-sulphur crude. The Oil Economy 37 Most crude oils contain small quantities of nitrogen.

Motor fuels are an important product. Gasoline is required for spark-ignition engines. The different needs of aircraft and vehicles are 48 Alternative Fuels—The Future of Hydrogen constrained by the different qualities of the fuels produced in the refineries. Aviation fuels demand a high octane. Other products are added to motor fuels to improve their performance in automobiles. After the motor fuels, special oils are obtained during distillation. These oils are used for lighter fuel, dry cleaning, solvents for cleaning, wax, polish, solvents for paint ,and solvents for rubber.

Large pipes are placed above the ovens, where the gas is subject to a shower of cold ammoniacal water. At this time it precipitates some of its tar. The primary and secondary condensers are used to get out the rest of the tar. Then the water from scrubbers absorbs the ammonia and the oils are distilled. Iron oxide purifiers remove toxic products such as sulphuretted hydrogen and hydrocyanic acid. The distillation of one ton of soft coal yields about 1,500 lbs of coke, 100 lbs of tar (for road construction and waterproofing), 10 lbs of benzol (which may be distilled to provide gasoline and napthalene), 7 lbs of ammonia (for the manufacture of fertilizer), and 12,000 cubic feet of gas for heating.
