The first accurate estimate of printed music sales in the United States was commissioned in 1952 by the Music Publishers Association. Only sixteen percent of the $30 million income from printed-music sales came from popular sheet music. 2 million came from classical, religious, and educational music. Today, sheet-music sales are far smaller than they once were, but the total dollars that a single song earns from all its uses—sheet music, radio and television airplay, recordings, live performances—is certainly greater for the publishers than ever.
Recorded background music became more prominent during the war years. Research had shown that playing background music in factories and businesses decreased fatigue, raised morale, and increased productivity by as much as twenty-five percent. This revelation had an enormous impact on the history and development of recorded sound. During the war years, the record company that produced the most hits on Billboard’s year-end top forty was Decca, with over forty percent for that four-year period. 20 Music of the Postwar Era The Postwar Years In the postwar years, more and more Americans had the time and the money to enjoy prerecorded music in their homes.
