You're a slave of your house, and it's not so easy to leave your children in someone else's care. If you do go out it's so expensive.

We lack contact with the outside world. We don't even have contact with the SUBJECTS TALKED ABOUT 21 neighbours. But still, the Dutch here are like that; they keep more to themselves' ! There are always flowers and it's always green there. Here it rains all the year through; those puddles, ditches and rivers; those bare trees and greyness! But then you can't see anything of those lovely clothes underneath! The girls serving in the shops, the butchers and the bakers all have a special kind of uniform; it's much nicer than everything higgeldypiggeldy. Even the lower classes are neatly dressed here. There is a great difference between rich and poor; here you can't tell a lady from a servant girl. The Dutchman here is not like the Dutchman in Indonesia; here they are much more friendly and ready to help. But our hospitality there - they can't beat it!
