1947 T Translator’s Introduction OME years ago—it was during the war of 1914-18—a friend showed me an old book, still in its original brown leather binding and smelling of the dust of ages. It was to me merely a Violln Method by Leopold Mozart—dated 1787, and the third edition. Our minds were at that time concemed with matters other than literature. So I retumed the book to its owner and forgot it. But no—it was not really forgotten. It was tucked away in that wondetful storehouse which we call in these days the subconsdous mind, the key of which may be tumed by the fingers o f assodation; a sound, a scent, a word, and the door flies open and out tumbles some 'forgotten’ thing which has lain on the shelf, covered by the thousand and one activities which, taken together, man calls ‘life’.
